TRADITION COMES TO PALAZZO ITALIA BEARING A GIFT: SILLETA
Today in the Colombia Pavilion, the tradition of "silletas" was celebrated to mark the presence in Expo of a delegation from the city of Medellín. In the first days of August, Medellín holds one of the cultural festivals that best represents Colombia, the "Feria de las Flores" (Festival of Flowers), a tribute to the flower-growers of the region who in ancient times would bring their productions of dahlias, carnations, daisies and roses in “Silletas”, that is, small wooden chairs, which were carried on shoulders. In the Colombia Pavilion today a young silletero whose family has handed down the tradition through the generations, recreated one of the typical floral compositions used in the parade of the Festival of Flowers of the city. After carrying it along the Decumano on his shoulders on a “silleta”, in line with the ancient tradition, he then donated it to the Italian Pavilion, where it will remain on display.
